Every comic fan knows the feeling. No pitch, no recommendation, no algorithm — just a cover that reaches off the shelf and grabs you. That’s how this episode started.

The book was Honor and Curse from Mad Cave Studios. The cover stopped me cold — the mood, the texture, the danger baked into the image. I needed to know who made it.

That search led to Nick Marinkovich — a Canadian comic artist, illustrator, and concept artist whose work doesn’t just illustrate a story, it carries weight. He’s the co-creator, alongside writer Fred Kennedy, of Dead Romans through Image Comics Shadowline — a creator-owned book steeped in the scale and brutality of Roman history. His cover work, including Honor and Curse, has that rare quality of feeling cinematic without feeling staged.

In this episode of Back to Pop, Nick and I get into:

• The exact moment a cover stops being “nice” and starts being unforgettable

• How a visual identity — grit, shadow, atmosphere, control — develops over years, not overnight

• The difference between drawing someone else’s world (cover work) and co-creating your own (Dead Romans)

• What he actually needs from a writer to do his best work

• The discipline behind comics — the part nobody romanticizes, the page-after-page grind

• The films, artists, and childhood influences are still showing up in his work today

This conversation is for anyone who’s ever judged a book by its cover — and been right to.
